The job before the pick

  • Take space in steps so your team can follow the fight instead of watching you die ahead of them.
  • Use cover, corners, and cooldown timing to turn pressure into playable space.
  • Reset before every defensive tool is gone; a living Vanguard can retake space on the next cycle.

Your job is to make the fight readable

A good Vanguard does not simply stand in front. In everyday ranked games, your first job is to make the next fight obvious enough that the rest of the team can join it. Move to a strong position, pause long enough for teammates to catch up, then spend cooldowns when the enemy is actually punishable.

If your team keeps arriving late, the answer is usually a shorter path or a slower engage. If your team keeps getting poked out before anything happens, you may need to take the next corner earlier so they have somewhere safe to play from.

Trade space for cooldowns, not health bars

Lower-rank Vanguards often wait until they are one hit from dying before backing out. That turns a normal pressure trade into a stagger. Decide your reset cue before the round starts: after your key defensive tool breaks, after the enemy spends multiple ultimates, or after your support line loses sight.

Backing up early can feel passive, but it often wins the next fight. You keep your life, deny free ultimate charge, and give your team another clean cooldown cycle.

Use hero choice to solve the lobby

Pick a Vanguard that matches the problem in front of you. If your team needs a stable front line, choose a hero whose value is easy to follow. If the enemy backline is exposed and your team can spend with you, a more aggressive pick can work. If you are being isolated every fight, swap toward survivability and clearer reset paths.
